# Gold and costs

Visitors pay nothing. Signed in, each tool call costs 1 gold from the person's wallet – on MCP, the HTTP API and the CLI alike.

## What costs gold

| Call | Cost |
| --- | --- |
| Listing the tools | Free |
| A public tool without sign-in | Free |
| Any tool call, signed in | 1 gold |

> **1 gold per call** comes out of the person's wallet, so they can see every step an agent took.

## When the wallet is empty

The call answers `402` with the code `out_of_gold`, and nothing runs. The CLI exits with code 4.

## Where gold comes from

A pass brings gold each month, and showing up to events earns more. [Your wallet](https://pirateskills.com/lab/wallet) lists every call an agent made. [What gold is for](https://pirateskills.com/gold)
